PURPOSE

The objective of the Workshop is to bring together experimentalists, modelers and engineers interested in different physical and chemical aspects of clay behaviour, including mechanical and transport properties. The focus of the conference will be on chemo-mechanical coupling.

Clay mechanical behaviour is affected by a variety of physical and chemical phenomena occurring at different scales. These are: nano-scale behaviour of water and ions in the interplatelet space, micro-structure evolution of clusters, free water and its solutes, and air, and finally, macroscopic behaviour of a continuum of the three phases.

We hope that an exchange between different visions of the same phenomena at different scales will be beneficial to all involved, resulting in a better understanding of variables and parameters controlling the overall clay behaviour.
Applications in geo-environmental and geotechnical technology, including

- nuclear and hazardous waste isolation,
- oil recovery,
- engineering geology,
- geo-chemistry,
- hydrology,

and in many others uses of clays will be addressed.

HOW TO REACH

Maratea is located about 200 km south of Napoli and about 400 km south of Roma.
Click here for macro- and meso-maps of the region.
Click on `mappa' here for a micro-map of the city, the hotel is in Acquafredda, 6km north of the center of Maratea.
Click here for an interactive multi-scale approach, starting from the italian peninsula (scale 1200km), down to the `comune' of Sapri and Maratea on both sides of Acquafredda (scale 20km).
Access is through airports of Napoli and Roma.
The most convenient railway station for the hotel is Sapri (about 6 km away) but Maratea (6 km away in the other direction) may also be used for local trains.
A good train service going north (Roma and Napoli) to south (Reggio Calabria and Sicilia),
stops at Sapri. The journey Sapri-Napoli is 2 hours and half and Sapri-Roma 4 hours.

* From Roma airport to Sapri:
- Take the train to Roma Termini; there is one each 30 mn
from 7h00 in the morning to 23h00 (7am to 11pm);
- Trains from Roma to Sapri/Maratea leave from Termini;
the first is 9h38am and the last one at 7h10pm.
Fare: Roma-Sapri LIT 60,000 (2nd class) up to LIT 80,000 (1st class)

Warning: A taxi from Roma Airport to Roma Railway Station is relatively expensive,
about LIT 150,000/Euro 80 .

* From Napoli airport to Sapri:
- Take the shuttle bus to Stazione Centrale/Piazza Garibaldi.
It takes half an hour. The fare is less than 3 Euros.
A taxi from the airport to the Central Railway Station costs about LIT 20,000/Euro 10.
- The trains are every 30-50 minutes throughout the day.
Most trains going southwest (Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Siracusa) stop at Sapri.
Fare: Napoli-Sapri LIT 16,000 (2nd class) up to LIT 60,000 (1st class)

Warning: Central Railway Station has two floors: Stazione Centrale (above ground) and Stazione Piazza Garibaldi (underground). Note at which station your train stops.

* From Sapri (or Maratea) to Hotel Villa del Mare (about 6km): taxi LIT 30,000/Euro 16.
Note: Hotel Villa del Mare has a shuttle bus waiting for the main trains from Napoli.

See train time tables Ferrovie dello Stato.
You may find on the site of Maratea additional practical information.
