PURPOSE

As a tribute to the commitment to scientific research of Professor Jean-Paul Boehler,
the Laboratoire Sols Solides Structures is organizing the conference
Mechanics of Heterogeneous Materials.
Professor Boehler passed away last june. He was professor of the highest rank at Université Joseph Fourier and conducted his research in this department. He was a true scholar and he devoted his life to scientific research. His diabetes prevented him from leaving Grenoble for long trips and certainly influenced his character. A strong-minded person, he was very demanding with himself, with colleagues and students as well.
He is most famous for his contributions to the anisotropic behaviour of engineering materials. Over the years, he has been involved in developing both experimental techniques

testing equipments for anisotropic metals and rocks, stereophotogrammetry

and mathematical tools

representation theory, constitutive behaviour of polycrystals and composites

to model the behaviour of heterogeneous materials including composites, polycrystals, powders, soils and rocks.
The following themes will be addressed during the conference:

Heterogeneous materials: averaging schemes, generalized continua;

Geomaterials: granular and rock mechanics, evolution of fabric, anisotropic constitutive behaviour, coupled problems;

Polycrystalline materials: evolving anisotropy and texture, non linear bounds, constitutive equations;

Damage Mechanics: anisotropy, phenomenological and microsructural formulations, fracture mechanics, strain localization.

`ANISOTROPIC BEHAVIOUR OF MATERIALS'
CDROM of Selected Scientific Papers of J.P. Boehler

Together with the symposium proceedings containing the four-page contributions of the lecturers, we will edit a compact disk containing most of the scientific work of J.P. Boehler (at this time, we are still lacking some copyright agreements).

Specifically, the CD will contain:

- the introductory notes by Professor Anthony Spencer, Nottingham University, UK, and by Professor Turan Onat, Yale University, USA. Familiar with the scientific work of J.P. Boehler, they have kindly accepted to lay down their appreciation of his contribution and their personal memories;

- a curriculum of J.P. Boehler, as found in his computer;

- the list and a three/four page abstract of the theses he has supervised plus the abstract of his own thesis;

- the list of his publications as found on his computer, updated probably in 1994, to which we have added the most recent ones we have been aware of;

- most of his scientific papers; they can be accessed in several ways: chronologically, by keywords (the latter resting on our responsibility), by journals and by co-authors.

The tools to read and navigate through the volume are also furnished.
The CD will be given together with the symposium proceedings to the participants. In addition, as long as available, it will be mailed free of charge to those individuals who wish to obtain it: please provide your full coordinates to Benjamin.Loret@hmg.inpg.fr
